Cycle of the First Dawn is a slow cultivation incremental built around repeated lives, discovery, and long-term progression. Players begin with very little, then improve through work, develop through training, and uncover opportunities by exploring, experimenting, failing, and repeating. Death and reincarnation are major parts of play rather than simple resets, and parts of progress carry forward when a life ends. The game is designed to be left alone for periods. There is no required build or single intended route: heavy optimization, broad training, mastery, exploration, or unplanned development are all viable. Discovery and carryover across lives give the progression a purpose beyond watching numbers rise.
How to play Cycle of the First Dawn
- Start with the limited options available at the beginning.
- Improve through work and develop through training.
- Explore and experiment to uncover new systems and opportunities.
- Let the game run for periods instead of constantly checking it.
- When a life ends, continue through reincarnation; parts of progress carry forward.
- Choose an optimized, broad, mastery-focused, exploratory, or unplanned approach; no single build is required.
Cycle of the First Dawn controls
The developer does not list specific controls on the game page. Click the play frame above and try the keyboard, mouse, or touch; most jam games show their controls on the first screen.
Tips for Cycle of the First Dawn
- Let the game run for periods rather than checking constantly; it is designed to be left alone.
- Treat failure and repetition as part of discovery, since systems are introduced through experimentation and failure.
- Parts of progress carry forward when a life ends, so death and reincarnation are progression rather than simple resets.
- There is no required build, so broad training, mastery, optimization, or unplanned development are all valid approaches.
- Keep an occasional exported save somewhere safe while the game is in active development.

About this game
Read the full developer description
Cycle of the First Dawn started as a side project while I was working on my main game, a turn-based tactics game.
I wanted an idle game I could leave running beside other work without constantly checking it. I also wanted progression to involve more than watching numbers increase for no particular reason.
I couldn’t find one that worked quite the way I wanted, so I started making this.
It has grown considerably since then.
About the Game
Cycle of the First Dawn is a slow cultivation incremental built around repeated lives, discovery, and long-term progression.
The game is designed to be left alone for periods of time.
You begin with very little. Work improves, training develops, new opportunities appear, and parts of your progress carry forward when a life ends.
Death and reincarnation are major parts of the game rather than simple resets.
The game deliberately does not show you everything at the beginning. Most systems are introduced through work, training, exploration, experimentation, failure, and repetition. Discovering what the game contains is part of the progression.
There is no required build or single intended route. You can optimize heavily, train broadly, pursue mastery, explore what you find, or simply let the character develop without planning every step.
Current State
The game is currently in Beta and is being actively developed.
The original release progression has been completed and the game now continues considerably beyond it, with additional systems, locations, events, histories, and longer-term progression being added over time.
Reaching the current edge of authored content does not stop the game. Existing unlocked activities and progression remain available.
The beta will continue receiving new content, balance changes, interface improvements, dialogue revisions, bug fixes, and adjustments based on player feedback.
Some systems that behave perfectly well in testing occasionally develop criminal intentions when exposed to actual players.
Saves
Save compatibility remains a priority.
As the game has grown, the save system has also been rebuilt to support a much larger amount of future content. Current saves use a compact format designed to store your actual progression rather than unnecessarily carrying copies of authored game content along with it.
Existing compatible browser saves are migrated automatically when they are first loaded under the new system. Older exported JSON saves also remain supported for import and are converted forward after loading.
Once a save has been migrated, the game continues using the current save format from that point onward rather than repeatedly relying on the older copy.
Manual save export and import are still supported. New exports use the game's compact save format, so they are no longer intended to be manually edited as readable text.
As always, keeping an occasional exported save somewhere safe is cheap insurance, particularly while the game is still in active development.
Development Disclosure
I designed the game’s systems, progression, setting, narrative direction, balance, and overall structure. I also test and revise each release.
I know how to program, but I’m a solo developer working on two games. AI tools have done a large amount of the raw programming work, along with helping with debugging, implementation, testing, and some production tasks on this one.
The game isn’t automatically generated.
I direct the work, review the code, test the systems, rewrite what doesn’t fit, and decide what stays or gets removed. Features are often rebuilt several times before they’re accepted, and some are discarded entirely.
AI reduces the amount of time required to implement things, but it doesn’t decide how the game should work, how the setting fits together, whether the pacing feels right, or whether the systems remain coherent across repeated lives.
Inspiration
Project Game 1 was one of the early inspirations for the interface and cultivation-incremental format.
I liked its compact panel layout and used that as a starting point, but wanted to make something slower, more persistent, and more focused on discovery and consequences across repeated lives.
No code or authored content was taken from it.
Pricing
The game is free and will remain free.
Donations are optional and help support continued development while I also work on my main game.
